Meeting Attendance Confirmation

To best support our groups we have created this document with suggested bullet points to effectively carry out the M.A.C. system within our meetings.

Things to consider:

  • The primary purpose of NA is to carry our message of recovery to the addict that still suffers.
  • The final authority remains in the group’s conscience as to whether to proceed with M.A.C. friendly meetings
  • “It is absolutely none of our business to decide who is ready to hear the message of recovery and who is not. Many of us have formed such a judgment about an addict’s desire for recovery and have been mistaken.” (It Works: How and Why, p.120.)
  • M.A.C. offers the opportunity to welcome addicts who may have no experience in the fellowship or no concept that recovery is possible.

Practicalities:

  • The opportunity to engage in the M.A.C. system is voluntary
  • NA groups that do decide to be M.A.C. friendly would then inform this to the ASC or PI Committee.
  • All meetings will be listed on the Where to Find as M.A.C. friendly.

Suggestions for Meeting Attendance Confirmation:

  • A group service member will verify meeting attendance at the end of the meeting using a mechanism agreed by the group.

Meeting Format Suggestions:

  • Incorporate an announcement in the preamble which establishes clearly the procedure by which M.A.C. will be verified so disruption is minimal.
  • Example: When the pot is passed around for the 7th tradition please put M.A.C. in the pot and collect after the meeting.

Possible disruptions:

  • In the event, an addict attends a non-M.A.C. meeting it is suggested that the newcomer is made welcome but it is explained that their M.A.C. will not be verified and signposted to local M.A.C. meetings.

If after reading this you have questions please seek guidance and support from your local PI committee or UK PI.
